A Heartwarming Journey with Alpacas

Having between us, given 83 years to the Veterinary profession, it was time to hang up our stethoscopes but we knew we would need to keep that animal connection. We were fine with our dogs, ducks, geese and chickens but before our young Alpacas arrived , there was lots of reading and webinars to understand this very special species. Neither of us expected to be so bowled over by their affection, human interest and wonderful personalities, but we are smitten.

First shearing, we were very apprehensive but along came Scott, highly recommended. He was efficient, fast but most importantly kind. And so on to castration last week, now they were all over two, After discussion with a young local Vet and Scott we decided to engage Scott’s services to gently restrain them and use local anaesthetic and pain relief.

Having previously always operated on our own pets it was hard and was the decision not to sedate/anaesthetise them as well the right decision? Yes definitely. They were very calm and we held their heads and reassured them. The Vet had a very clean still surgical site and once complete they were up on their feet in 20 seconds and out grazing. Three of them even watched intently over the hurdle as the fourth was done and once all back together they enjoyed a treat and never looked back. A good experience for all parties.
